Whales: Giants of the Ocean
Whales are among the largest and most remarkable animals on Earth. These marine mammals live in oceans around the world, from warm tropical waters to the cold seas surrounding the poles.
Life Beneath the Surface
Although whales spend their lives in water, they breathe air through blowholes located on top of their heads. They must regularly return to the surface to breathe before diving again in search of food or traveling through the ocean.
Whales are warm-blooded, give birth to live young, and nurse their calves with milk. A thick layer of fat called blubber helps protect them from cold water and stores energy during long migrations.
Two Main Groups
Whales are generally divided into baleen whales and toothed whales. Baleen whales filter small animals from the water using flexible plates inside their mouths. This group includes blue whales, humpback whales, and gray whales.
Toothed whales use teeth to catch fish, squid, and other prey. Many of them also use echolocation, producing sounds and listening for returning echoes to understand their surroundings. Sperm whales, belugas, and orcas belong to this group.
The Blue Whale
The blue whale is the largest known animal to have ever lived. An adult can grow longer than a city bus and weigh well over one hundred tonnes. Despite its enormous size, it feeds mainly on tiny crustaceans called krill.
Communication and Migration
Whales communicate using clicks, whistles, pulses, and complex songs. Some sounds can travel across great distances underwater. Humpback whales are especially famous for their long, patterned songs.
Many species migrate thousands of kilometres each year. They often feed in cold, nutrient-rich waters before traveling to warmer regions where they mate and give birth.
Protecting Whales
Commercial hunting once caused severe declines in many whale populations. Today, whales also face threats from fishing gear, ship collisions, underwater noise, pollution, and changes to ocean ecosystems.
Conservation programs, safer fishing practices, protected habitats, and international cooperation can help whale populations recover. Protecting whales also supports healthier oceans because these animals play an important role in marine food webs and nutrient cycles.

YouTube is one of the most influential platforms in modern media, but its origin story is surprisingly simple: a small team wanted an easier way to share video online. In the early 2000s, uploading and sending video files was slow, formats were inconsistent, and most websites weren’t built for smooth playback. YouTube’s founders focused on removing those barriers—making video sharing as easy as sending a link.
Who Founded YouTube?
YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees: Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. They combined product thinking, engineering skills, and a clear user goal: create a website where anyone could upload a video and watch it instantly in a browser.
- Chad Hurley — product/design focus and early CEO role
- Steve Chen — engineering and infrastructure
- Jawed Karim — engineering and early concept support
The Problem YouTube Solved
At the time, sharing video often meant emailing huge files or dealing with complicated players and downloads. YouTube made video:
- Uploadable by non-experts (simple interface)
- Streamable in the browser (no special setup)
- Sharable through links and embedding on other sites
Early Growth and the First Video
YouTube launched publicly in 2005. One of the most famous early moments was the first uploaded video, “Me at the zoo,” featuring co-founder Jawed Karim. The clip was short and casual—exactly the kind of everyday content that proved the platform’s big idea: ordinary people could publish video without needing a studio.

Why Google Bought YouTube
By 2006, YouTube’s traffic was exploding. Video hosting is expensive—bandwidth and storage costs rise fast when millions of people watch content daily. Google’s acquisition gave YouTube the infrastructure and advertising ecosystem to grow into a sustainable business.
What YouTube’s Founding Changed
YouTube didn’t just create a popular website; it reshaped how people learn, entertain themselves, and build careers online. Its founding helped accelerate:
- Creator-driven media and influencer culture
- How-to education and free tutorials at massive scale
- Music discovery, commentary, and global community trends
From a small startup idea to a global video powerhouse, YouTube’s founding is a classic example of a simple product solving a real problem—and changing the internet in the process.

A greater all round betting experience, more variety, more markets, more in-play.
With spread betting, not only do you get a wider choice of markets than with fixed odds betting, you also get more in-play options. During a live match you have the option to close bets (to take a profit or limit losses) as well as open new bets. At all times you have the option to back a team or individual to perform well or badly.
Greater potential reward for your sporting knowledge
With a fixed odds bet you either win or lose. Even if a result goes heavily in your favour, you still get the same return as if it wins by a narrow margin.
Take a corners bet.
- With a fixed odd bet you may be able to back over 11 corners at even money. A £20 stake will risk £20 and could win you £20. If there are 12 corners you would win £20, if there are 20 corners you would still win £20 and if there were only 10 corners you lose £20.
-
However with a spread bet, a £5 buy at 11 has a maximum risk of £55 (in the unlikely event of no corners). If there are 12 corners in the match you would win £5 but if there were 20 corners you would win £45. If there were only 10 corners you would lose only £5.
So you see with spread betting, the more right you are the more you win. Conversely, if a result were to go heavily against you, it’s possible you could lose more.
It’s not as risky as you might think.
Spread betting, like all forms of betting, is only as risky as you want it to be. By controlling the size of your stake, you are controlling how much risk you are willing to take on. It’s exactly like having a £2,000 fixed-odds bet on a team to win versus having £20 – it’s all down to what you feel comfortable with.
A Stop Loss account is a good way of controlling the perceived risk of spread betting. With this type of account, every bet you place has a maximum win and loss limit applied but again, it correlates directly with the stake you choose. That’s the important thing to remember, it all comes back to the stake size and as Sporting Index accepts stakes as low as £0.05 on some markets, we cater for all sizes of bet.
Learning without risk
Additionally, our Demo account is a great way of learning without the risk. It will give you an idea of how volatile the markets you are interested in could be; then when you open an account for real you will have a better idea of how to manage your stake size.
There is a strong case to suggest that the amount you bet is actually more important than what you bet on. We reviewed five popular staking methods. Discover which is best.
Professional blackjack player and author Ed Thorp was a successful card-counter. Too successful, many would argue, as his ability at the tables of Las Vegas’ biggest casinos lead to the implementation of multiple decks and the start of a war on card-counting.
Despite his expertise as a professional gambler – he published two books on the subject – he attributed the majority of his success to a staking formula created by mathematician John Kelly Jr. “Playing strategy is maybe a third to a quarter … of what you’re going to get out of it. Betting strategy may be two thirds or three quarters”.
As you can see, one betting system provides far greater returns than the others, while one drops you out pretty quickly.
The five systems are outlined below – which letter do you think each line corresponds to?
Strategy 1: Bet everything, every time
Bet your entire bankroll on each bet. The advantage is that you get big returns, fast. The downside? As soon as you lose, you’re out of money and out of the game.
Strategy 2: Fixed wager
Bet a fixed amount for each bet, and don’t vary no matter how much you win. In this example, it was $100. If your chance of winning 55% on a 2.000 bet, this method means you’ve dramatically reduced your chance of losing your entire stake. Unfortunately, it means your winnings are limited to increase in a “slow and steady” fashion.
Strategy 3: Martingale
Bet double your stake after any failed bet, to cover your losses with the next bet’s winnings. This gives a quicker increase than fixed wagers (as you’re doubling up to cover any losses). If you experience sequential losses, however, the required stakes continue to double, and you’ll very soon be betting large amounts to cover your losses.
Strategy 4: Fibonacci
Increase your stake in a Fibonacci sequence, to your losses with the next bet’s winnings – learn more about the Fibonacci sequence here. This method has similar drawbacks to Martingale, but it reduces how quickly the stake increases if you’re on a losing streak (and therefore also reduces the rate at which you win).
Strategy 5: Proportional betting
Bet a fraction of your bankroll in proportion to your edge. In this simulation, we used the Kelly equation for proportional betting. In Kelly, your bet should be your edge divided by the odds. In this example, as the edge is 10% and the odds are evens, 10 / 1 is 10.
Therefore 10% of the $1000 wallet should be bet: $100. Should that bet be successful, the next bet would increase to $110, 10% of the new $1100 wallet. This means winnings increase quicker than in the fixed-wager system, and losses slow down.
The correct answer is:
A. Bet everything
B. Martingale
C. Fixed wager
D. Proportional Betting
E. Fibonacci
As you can tell from the descriptions above, proportional betting appears to have a natural advantage over the others systems. Imagine you’re down to your last $100 – you’d be betting $10, (and decreasing), keeping you in the game for much longer than a fixed-bet system, where your last $100 would be your last bet.
Manchester United have set their sights on the top in the Barclays Premier League following their victory over arch-rivals Liverpool.
United endured a difficult start under Louis van Gaal, but they are now within eight points of league leaders Chelsea following six successive wins.
Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie were all on target in the 3-0 victory over Brendan Rodgers’ beleaguered side on Sunday.
And midfielder Michael Carrick believes United will be primed for an assault on top position if they maintain their excellent form over the rest of the festive period.
“We are always looking at how we can get to the top,” Carrick told MUTV.
“All in all we are in a pretty decent position at the moment. We need to stay up there, we need to stay in touch, then come Christmas and come January, as we’ve said for many years now, if we are up there challenging then we will give ourselves a great chance.”
Van Gaal is refusing to get carried away with United’s form, however.
“We have won six matches in a row, and that is fantastic but we have to improve our playing style still,” the Dutchman said.
BETTING PREVIEW
Juventus are still top of the heap in Italy and will travel to face Fiorentina on Friday night. Judging by the recent performances by Viola at home, I’m going to suggest we bet against them here at very big prices.
Juventus are, historically, Fiorentina’s bogey team – the team that they have suffered the most goals against and conceded the most goals in Serie A. They’ve been beaten 69 times and allowed 244 in 150 meetings.
Recent h2h does not look good either, with Fiorentina winning just 2 of the last 25 Serie A games against Juve. What’s more, they are not looking strong at home, and struggling to show dominance. You’ll find Fiorentina have scored the majority of their goals away from home, and at home they have failed to score in 67% of their matches!
Fiorentina have won 2 and lost 2 of their last 4 home games, but know that the 2 losses came against Roma and Napoli, the sides that occupy 2nd and 3rd below Juventus. They were beaten 2-0 here by Roma and 1-0 by Napoli, failing to score each time. Juventus brings a defence that have allowed just 5 goals all season, including just 2 on the road!
THE BETTING VERDICT
Juventus’ 4 game winning streak has seen them keep 3 clean sheets and allow just a solitary goal. They will stifle Fiorentina and get the win.
