Advantages of spread betting
A greater all round betting experience, more variety, more markets, more in-play.
With spread betting, not only do you get a wider choice of markets than with fixed odds betting, you also get more in-play options. During a live match you have the option to close bets (to take a profit or limit losses) as well as open new bets. At all times you have the option to back a team or individual to perform well or badly.
Greater potential reward for your sporting knowledge
With a fixed odds bet you either win or lose. Even if a result goes heavily in your favour, you still get the same return as if it wins by a narrow margin.
Take a corners bet.
- With a fixed odd bet you may be able to back over 11 corners at even money. A £20 stake will risk £20 and could win you £20. If there are 12 corners you would win £20, if there are 20 corners you would still win £20 and if there were only 10 corners you lose £20.
- However with a spread bet, a £5 buy at 11 has a maximum risk of £55 (in the unlikely event of no corners). If there are 12 corners in the match you would win £5 but if there were 20 corners you would win £45. If there were only 10 corners you would lose only £5.
So you see with spread betting, the more right you are the more you win. Conversely, if a result were to go heavily against you, it’s possible you could lose more.
It’s not as risky as you might think.
Spread betting, like all forms of betting, is only as risky as you want it to be. By controlling the size of your stake, you are controlling how much risk you are willing to take on. It’s exactly like having a £2,000 fixed-odds bet on a team to win versus having £20 – it’s all down to what you feel comfortable with.
A Stop Loss account is a good way of controlling the perceived risk of spread betting. With this type of account, every bet you place has a maximum win and loss limit applied but again, it correlates directly with the stake you choose. That’s the important thing to remember, it all comes back to the stake size and as Sporting Index accepts stakes as low as £0.05 on some markets, we cater for all sizes of bet.
Learning without risk
Additionally, our Demo account is a great way of learning without the risk. It will give you an idea of how volatile the markets you are interested in could be; then when you open an account for real you will have a better idea of how to manage your stake size.
Why your staking method is important
There is a strong case to suggest that the amount you bet is actually more important than what you bet on. We reviewed five popular staking methods. Discover which is best.
Professional blackjack player and author Ed Thorp was a successful card-counter. Too successful, many would argue, as his ability at the tables of Las Vegas’ biggest casinos lead to the implementation of multiple decks and the start of a war on card-counting.
Despite his expertise as a professional gambler – he published two books on the subject – he attributed the majority of his success to a staking formula created by mathematician John Kelly Jr. “Playing strategy is maybe a third to a quarter … of what you’re going to get out of it. Betting strategy may be two thirds or three quarters”.
As you can see, one betting system provides far greater returns than the others, while one drops you out pretty quickly.
The five systems are outlined below – which letter do you think each line corresponds to?
Strategy 1: Bet everything, every time
Bet your entire bankroll on each bet. The advantage is that you get big returns, fast. The downside? As soon as you lose, you’re out of money and out of the game.
Strategy 2: Fixed wager
Bet a fixed amount for each bet, and don’t vary no matter how much you win. In this example, it was $100. If your chance of winning 55% on a 2.000 bet, this method means you’ve dramatically reduced your chance of losing your entire stake. Unfortunately, it means your winnings are limited to increase in a “slow and steady” fashion.
Strategy 3: Martingale
Bet double your stake after any failed bet, to cover your losses with the next bet’s winnings. This gives a quicker increase than fixed wagers (as you’re doubling up to cover any losses). If you experience sequential losses, however, the required stakes continue to double, and you’ll very soon be betting large amounts to cover your losses.
Strategy 4: Fibonacci
Increase your stake in a Fibonacci sequence, to your losses with the next bet’s winnings – learn more about the Fibonacci sequence here. This method has similar drawbacks to Martingale, but it reduces how quickly the stake increases if you’re on a losing streak (and therefore also reduces the rate at which you win).
Strategy 5: Proportional betting
Bet a fraction of your bankroll in proportion to your edge. In this simulation, we used the Kelly equation for proportional betting. In Kelly, your bet should be your edge divided by the odds. In this example, as the edge is 10% and the odds are evens, 10 / 1 is 10.
Therefore 10% of the $1000 wallet should be bet: $100. Should that bet be successful, the next bet would increase to $110, 10% of the new $1100 wallet. This means winnings increase quicker than in the fixed-wager system, and losses slow down.
The correct answer is:
A. Bet everything
C. Fixed wager
D. Proportional Betting
As you can tell from the descriptions above, proportional betting appears to have a natural advantage over the others systems. Imagine you’re down to your last $100 – you’d be betting $10, (and decreasing), keeping you in the game for much longer than a fixed-bet system, where your last $100 would be your last bet.
Manchester United to win the Premier League? Michael Carrick believes United will be in the running for the title
Manchester United have set their sights on the top in the Barclays Premier League following their victory over arch-rivals Liverpool.
United endured a difficult start under Louis van Gaal, but they are now within eight points of league leaders Chelsea following six successive wins.
Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie were all on target in the 3-0 victory over Brendan Rodgers’ beleaguered side on Sunday.
And midfielder Michael Carrick believes United will be primed for an assault on top position if they maintain their excellent form over the rest of the festive period.
“We are always looking at how we can get to the top,” Carrick told MUTV.
“All in all we are in a pretty decent position at the moment. We need to stay up there, we need to stay in touch, then come Christmas and come January, as we’ve said for many years now, if we are up there challenging then we will give ourselves a great chance.”
Van Gaal is refusing to get carried away with United’s form, however.
“We have won six matches in a row, and that is fantastic but we have to improve our playing style still,” the Dutchman said.
Betting prediction for Juventus vs Fiorentina
Juventus are still top of the heap in Italy and will travel to face Fiorentina on Friday night. Judging by the recent performances by Viola at home, I’m going to suggest we bet against them here at very big prices.
Juventus are, historically, Fiorentina’s bogey team – the team that they have suffered the most goals against and conceded the most goals in Serie A. They’ve been beaten 69 times and allowed 244 in 150 meetings.
Recent h2h does not look good either, with Fiorentina winning just 2 of the last 25 Serie A games against Juve. What’s more, they are not looking strong at home, and struggling to show dominance. You’ll find Fiorentina have scored the majority of their goals away from home, and at home they have failed to score in 67% of their matches!
Fiorentina have won 2 and lost 2 of their last 4 home games, but know that the 2 losses came against Roma and Napoli, the sides that occupy 2nd and 3rd below Juventus. They were beaten 2-0 here by Roma and 1-0 by Napoli, failing to score each time. Juventus brings a defence that have allowed just 5 goals all season, including just 2 on the road!
THE BETTING VERDICT
Juventus’ 4 game winning streak has seen them keep 3 clean sheets and allow just a solitary goal. They will stifle Fiorentina and get the win.
2014/15 La Liga Predictions
Stick your neck out! Who will win the league?
Sami: There usually aren’t many teams in the race but predicting the La Liga winners is always a difficult task. The balance in Real’s side, carrying on from the previous season seems impressive. Ancelotti as a manager has that in him to get it to work as well. They aren’t just massive names, but names that fit into the system well.
Vishal: Real Madrid were the top team in Europe last season, and they have only strengthened this season. I cannot look beyond them for the league title. Their target should also be this title, especially after winning the European Cup, and the domestic cup last season. Also, their competitors don’t really seem that strong, especially Atletico, who have lost some of their best players.
The next best. Who’ll secure the coveted Champions League spots?
Sami: There’s no stopping the Top 3. Atletico, Barcelona & Real Madrid will be in the top three (not in that order). That coveted 4th spot is more difficult to predict this time around. Athletic & Sevilla impressed last season and should do so again. I want to say Valencia, I like the squad they have with some exciting young players, but their instability with managers is concerning. If I had to stick my neck out, I’d go with Unai Emery’s Sevilla.
Vishal: Atletico have gotten weaker, but not weak enough to crash out of the top 4. Simeone is a very good manager, and has got some strong replacements. Barcelona will also be there for sure, with all their additions, and their already incredible team. Aside from these 2, and Real Madrid, who will win the title, Sevilla will possibly make it too. They’ve lost their star man, but still have an amazing manager in Unai Emery. I’m tipping them to make an impact in the league ahead of the likes of Valencia, Athletic, and Sociedad.
Down and out. Who is getting relegated this season?
Sami: Very excited by the return of Deportivo; it was incredibly disappointing to see them in the second division; with a complete bias, I expect them to survive. Can’t say the same about Cordoba & Eibar. The former may well be seen as a guaranteed three point opposition, while Elche don’t particularly inspire confidence. Having said that, never saw Betis going down last season, and they finished bottom, so don’t take my word for this!
Vishal: Vallecano play very good football, but they’re not effective enough in possession to make the grade for me. They got a lot of plaudits last season for holding more possession than Barcelona, but they lost the game anyway. Of the newcomers, Eibar look a little weak, and look likely to go down. Granada too, weren’t always convincing last season, and so, I’ll give the other new comers the benefit of the doubt.
Betting review of Boston vs LA Lakers
The historic clash in the NBA will see another episode tonight, but few times have these two proud basketball franchises been both so irrelevant.
Celtics is in rebuilding mode but honestly they were expected to be a little better than their current 5-11 record considering they play in the weak Eastern Conference and also had 10 games at home (3-7). Boston doesn’t really have any weapons aside of Rondo, but Rajon is a player that needs quality around him to maximize his passing abilities. Boston is coming after an overtime home win over Detroit two days ago, a team that the Lakers easily beat on the road this week.
LA has an abysmal 5-14 record (3-6 away) but they are much better than that, the losing record being largely due to the fact that they play in the stacked Western Conference and also have a bad matchup against run & gun teams, like most of the West is. Lakers have been abusing the East so far, winning 4 out of 5, including one over the current top East team, Toronto. Their first loss came two days ago against Wizards, but even that defeat came to show how weak the East is – Lakers played on the road against the current 2nd best team in the East, played a poor match and were still down by only 4 with 2 minutes to go. Look, LA is still not a great team, but surely they would be playoff bound in the East, which Boston clearly isn`t.
The Lakers have been really good to me this season – I picked them 4 times to win, each time against the East, each time I won. I don`t plan on going like this much longer since the bookies are finally giving them some respect and I don`t want to ride Los Angeles blindly until they lose, but these odds to win at Boston are still way too high. LA is the better team between these two, playing better basketball, does not have a bad matchup (actually a great one, will dominate the frontcourt where they usually struggle) and they are much better than their record says.
It remains to be seen how much of an impact home court advantage will have in this massive derby clash, but Lakers to win is my tip, they have at least 50% chances to pull it off. No point in taking the 3,5 spread as far as I`m concerned, the value is on Lakers to win and the spread is not too big. I expect Kobe to have a good one after two weak performances, so that should also be a huge boost for LA. My bet comes with 10 units here. Prediction: Boston Celtics – Los Angeles Lakers 100-108.
Spread Betting Explained
So, what is the Bet? Unlike traditional share trading, you never own the actual share or commodity. You only make a call on whether you think it will go up or down in value. You stake a certain amount of money per point movement; the more it moves in your favour the more money you make, the more it moves against your prediction, the more you lose.
Ehat is the Spread? Concept is same like a stock future. The spread is the difference between buying ans selling price. You will buy at the higher price if you think the market will rise (Going Long), or sell at the lower price if you think the market will fall (Going Short). The tighter the spread, the smaller the market has to move for you to make a profit.
Now that your concept is clear, US readers you might want to skip rest of the article as SPREAD BETTING IS LEGALLY NOT ALLOWED IN USA. Spread betting can be done in UK, few other european markets and Australia only at this time. They are operated by brokers, known as spread betting companies.
What can you Spread Bet on?
Pretty much everything that can be individually traded are in scope of spread betting.
- Stock market indices – This is the most commonly traded aspect in spread betting. You can spread bet on almost all major intl. markets
- Individual Stocks – Shares in individual companies from any market in the world
- Commodities – Almost all commonly traded commodities, metals, fodder and agricultural produces.
- Currencies – Foreign Exchange, USD, EUR, GBP, AUD etc.
- Interest rates and Bonds – Short term or long term interest rates, Government Bonds or gilts.
How does a Spread Bet work?
First, you select your target, whether its a stock index or an individual stock you want to bet on.
Let’s take a Dow for example
Start by checking the price quoted by the spread betting company. It will be the actual index share price. There will be always be two prices, a buying price and a selling price; example 11900 – 12050
As first step you must decide if you expect DOW to go up higher than the buy price, or go down lower than the sell price. If you think it will go up, you buy DOW at the buy price, if you think DOW to go down, you will sell DOW at the sell price.
As second step, you must decide how much you are betting, that is the amount of money you gain or lose per point of movement on the value of the index. It is always expressed in currency per point of movement e.g. £10 per point.
If you buy DOW at 11900 and it moves up by 100 points and at that point you decide to sell, you made a profit of 100 (points) * 10 (per point) = £1000. You may loose a huge amount of money if luck is not in your side.
If you sell to open your trade, you sell at the lower price, and when you close the trade, you must close at the higher price quoted at the time. You can close a trade at any time whether you are making a profit or a loss. You do not have to meet any specific value on any specific date.
You can put stop loss the same way you do with your loosing stocks to cut down your losses.
Spread betting companies require a security deposit to cover potential losses, known as margin requirement.
Boxing Betting For Dummies
Have you ever thought about betting on boxing but did not know what to do? Well, thanks to the Internet, it’s pretty easy. I hope I didn’t offend anyone by branding this article for Dummies, but I figured it would grab your attention. If you are still reading, it obviously did. With that, let’s get to the quick tutorial.
Boxing uses the money line and odds are placed next to each boxer’s name. The boxer with the negative (-) number is the favorite and the one with the positive (+) one is the underdog. It’s really simple: whenever there is a negative (-), you lay that amount to win a dollar; whenever there is a positive (+), you get that amount for every dollar wagered.
For example, the odds on a boxing match could read:
- De La Hoya -300
- Pacquiao +200
- Draw +1,000
In this mythical matchup, bettors who wager on De La Hoya will have to risk $300 dollars in order to win $100 dollars, while folks who bet on Pacquiao would wager $100 dollars to win $200 dollars. Those bettors who believe the fight will end in a draw would risk $100 dollars to win $1,000 dollars.
On all boxing bets, your fighter must win the fight or you lose your wager. If the fight is a draw, bets on both fighters are declared losers, and only the bookmakers and anyone who bet on the draw win.
Proposition bets or props, are single wagers placed on outcomes that are not directly related to who is going to win or lose the fight.
The most popular boxing prop is the over/under for how long the fight will last. This wager works similar to the over/under bet in other sports, but instead of betting on the number of points scored in a game, you are betting on how many rounds the fight will last.
- De La Hoya vs Pacquiao Lasts Over 8 Rounds -150
- De La Hoya vs Pacquiao Lasts Under 8 Rounds +100
If you wager on the over (eight full rounds), you will win your bet as long as both fighters are in the ring for the start of the ninth round. You would bet $150 dollars in order to win $100 dollars.
If you wager on the under (eight full rounds), you will win your bet as long as the fight is stopped anytime before the end of the eight round. You would bet $100 dollars in order to win $100 dollars.
If the fight is stopped between the end of the eighth round and the beginning of the ninth round, all over/under bets would be declared losers and only the house (bookmakers) win.
Betting on the Knockout
The other main proposition wager in boxing is betting on which fighter will win by a knockout or stoppage. Using the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Manny Pacquiao example again, check out these make-believe odds:
- Oscar De La Hoya by KO or stoppage -200
- Manny Pacquiao by KO or stoppage +200
For this bet, Golden Boys win $100 dollars on a $200 wager, if De La Hoya scores a knockout or the referee stops the bout and declares him the winner. If he wins the fight by decision, his backers lose the wager because he did not win by knockout or stoppage.
For the Pac-Men, the same situation applies. Pacquiao must win by knockout or stoppage in order for his backers to be paid $200 dollars on a wager of $100 dollars.
It may have been a bit long-winded, but these are the basics of betting on boxing. For the record, I am not a professional gambler; I’m just a boxing fanatic who likes to predict boxing winners and losers. If you want to put your prediction skills to the test, you at least now know what to do. Whether you predict the right big fight
results is another matter altogether!
